Whittington is a village on the outskirts of Lichfield. Whittington is
located just off the A51 between Tamworth and Lichfield in the County of
Staffordshire. The Coventry Canal and Birmingham & Fazeley Canal
meet on the outskirts of the village.
The first sight most people have of the village is the tall steeple of St
Giles Church rising high above the village. St Giles Church is the burial place
for Thomas Spencer of Marks & Spencer fame. The Church Hall is in fact named
after him.
To many ex-army folk, Whittington Barracks is the most well known landmark. Situated just outside the village, the sound of marching troops and
gunfire is not uncommon. The barracks is the centre for new recruits into the
British Army. At one time the home of the Staffordshire Regiment, it is now the
reception centre for a number of regiments. A museum open to the public, dedicated to the
Staffordshire Regiment, is located on the barracks site.
The village has an infant / primary school. There are three pubs in the
village, The Dog , The Bell and The Swan, with several more in the surrounding
area. Other facilities include a post office / newsagent, a Co-op supermarket,
the Whittington Ruby Chinese take-away, Twirls & Curls Hair Salon, a chemist
and an antique shop. AND on two nights a week the Fish & Chip
Van does its rounds of the village.
