Top Tips

Long Haul?

1. In economy, many jumbo's don't have air jets above seats, relying on the air conditioning. A pocket battery operated fan is a good investment. When 300 plus people board the plane, the temperature can rise sharply particularly when boarding in a hot country.
2. Keep your passport and a pen with you when in your seat. If you are entering a country outside the EC, you will probably need to fill in a landing card with your passport details.
3. When allocating seats at check-in, don't choose a seat in front of one of the dividing sections e.g. the galleys, as the videos are often projected onto these walls and will be very distracting if you want to sleep as they are generally played continuously.
Toilets too are noisy if you are sitting adjacent to them.
Weigh up the convenience with the potential noise.
4. Very few airlines permit smoking. The toilets have smoke detectors too.
5. Many airports will call the passengers by rows. If you want to board the plane before the rush, choose a seat towards the rear of the plane. Again, there is a down side, first on, last off!
6. Most long haul flights shut the blinds and operate a lights-off policy after about two to three hours of the flight.
7. If you suffer from swollen feet, exercise your feet regularly to keep the blood flowing!
8. A personal stereo can be very useful if the on-board entertainment is not too good, as is unfortunately, often the case!

Short Haul?

1. Think about your hand baggage size. If you are carrying cabin baggage only, use a 'floppy' bag as it can be squashed to fit in the lockers if there is not much locker space!

General tips

1. When you pack your bags, think carefully about items you are packing. X-ray equipment will pick up all sorts of items in your bags which can look like weapons. If you are carrying electrical items, you may be asked to show that they work, this can include cameras, so don't pack these items deep in your bag as it will only have to be turned out, which could be embarrassing!!
2. Don't pack knives or potential offensive weapons in your hand luggage unless you have to, as they will be taken away from you and put into the hold, and will invariably get lost in transit.
